Squirrel Catapult

Squirrel Fun. I’m all for this type of thing…in fact I’d have enjoyed it more if he had clipped the railing on the way over.

H.P. Lovecraft – On Food…

Posted on 15 June 2007

I’ve always respected the author H.P. Lovecraft. In college, he was one of my favorite reads. Now learning of his opinions of various foods, my admiration grows to new heights.

On cheese:

“…preferably of the common hard variety, medium strength. I hate Roquefort, dislike cottage cheese, just tolerate Camembert and Brie, and am neutral about Limburger—which latter I’ve tasted only once, at Whitehead’s a year ago last spring…”

On spaghetti:

“Like Italian cooking very much—especially spaghetti with meat-and-tomato sauce, utterly engulfed in a snowbank of grated Parmesan cheese.”

A snowbank! Imagine that! Can’t you just see Howard now, plowing deep into a pillowy cloud of Parmesan, dreaming up his next eldritch tale?

I know I can…

On vegetables:

“Of other vegetables I like peas & onions, can tolerate cabbage & turnips, am neutral toward cauliflower, have no deep enmity toward carrots, prefer to dodge parsnips & asparagus, shun string beans & brussel sprouts & abominate spinach. I like rhubarb—& am also really fond of baked beans prepared in the ancient New England way…”

Personally, I “abominate” tomatoes. Hideous things, really.

What’s wrong with the world – Exhibit A.

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Josh Hancock died in the early morning of April 29th when the SUV he was driving struck a tow truck that was assisting a stalled motorist.

He was drunk, speeding, using a cell phone, not wearing a seatbelt, and marijuana was found in the SUV. Please take the time to read that sentence again. Let it sink in.

So naturally his father is suing the restaurant that served him the drinks, the towing company, and the driver of the stalled car.

The lawsuit faults the driver for “allowing his car to reach the point where it was stalled on the highway.” The towing service is accused of being slow in moving the stalled vehicle, and of not putting flares out. The restaurant is accused of serving Hancock drinks.

This is so utterly, completely, wrong that it’s benumbing. Read about it here, if you have the stomach.

Ze Frank

Produced monday through friday for one year, “the show with zefrank” was a short video program and podcast.

It’s weird and addicting.

Scary

Check out this website…it has pictures of some of the most dangerous roads in the world. That cliffside road in Bolivia is just NUTS.

And just in time for the Holiday, a website devoted to pictures of kids who are scared of Santa.

In some cases, it’s completely justified…

Very Short Stories

Via Wired:

Hemingway once wrote a story in just six words (“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”) and is said to have called it his best work. So we asked sci-fi, fantasy, and horror writers from the realms of books, TV, movies, and games to take a shot themselves.

Orson Scott Card’s first one is my favorite. William Gibson seems bitter.
