Amazing

Little I-AA Appalachian State goes into the “Big House” and defeats #5 Michigan.

Against all odds.

Moments like this is why I watch sports.

O THAT’S GONE!
HOLY COW!
WATCH THE—-
Look at the Penguin!
It’s not gone.

I was watching him run.
Wait a minute.
When he hit it
That was the funniest run I’ve ever seen.
Watch this.

5/31/87 Oak @ NY Tommy John pitching to Ron Cey, 2nd inning, no outs,
bases empty (long fly to left) score 1-1

I was with Gil McDougald the other day.
Oh boy.
He looks great.
Playing golf over in Spring Lake’s Golf Club.
Sad thing is that, You know, He’s totally deaf now.
FOUL! He stays alive!
Still has a great sense of humor.
But he had to retire, because he was getting all those phone calls
In his business.
And he just couldn’t, no way he could hear anything.
He sold his business.
Very happy.
They love him down there at Spring Lake.

But I was very happy.
“Cause he does not talk and tell stories and, he’s not a good listener.
But one thing he told me
That I was very happy about —
LOW! BALL FOUR!
WHAT AN EYE BY NOKES!
How do you like that?
Behind 0 and 2 and he works his way for a walk!
You know what McDougald told me when he saw me?
He hadn’t seen me for a while.
He says “I wanna tell you something.
You’re not as ugly as you look on TV.”
He said that to me.
I said “Thanks Gil.”

5/25/91 NY @ Balt Flanagan pitching to Nokes 9th inning, no outs, bases empty,
Score tied 4-4

Weekend Blogtacular

Posted on 23 April 2007

Long story short, here’s what went down last week/weekend chez Squidly

Week of April 16th

  • Diane’s parents were down, helping her with a painting project at her work. They were a huge help to her as she fixed up a room in which she treats patients. They also enjoyed their time with Lauren in the evenings.

Friday

  • My parents drove down from NY to spend the weekend. They beat the NJ traffic crush and made it in good shape.
  • I went for some take-out from Dadz (Ribs, Wings, Onion Rings.)
  • We watched the Yankees/Red Sox. They lost (too bad for Dad.)
  • My “1 week coughing” anniversary (more on this later…)

Saturday

  • Lauren had her first T-Ball practice. Afterwards, her coach approached me and asked if I would be willing to “help” in the coming weeks. Assistant coach?
  • We went to Golf Galaxy, Target, and then Wegmans. My parents really, really like golf, and we needed stuff at the other two places.
  • I made Coq au Vin again. I thought it came out pretty good. I also like saying that… “Coq au Vin”. Any recipe that requires a bottle of wine to complete is ok by me.
  • Haircuts. We needed them. We got them. Diane even got her hair colored. My Mom the hairdresser is good…
  • We watched the Yankees/Red Sox. They lost (too bad for Dad.)
  • Still coughing. Mom says it’s allergies because I used to get shots for allergies as a kid.

Sunday

  • We were so enthused by a gazebo we saw at Target on Saturday, we went and bought it. Call it Gazebo 2.0. You may remember Gazebo 1.0.
  • Then we ate at PF Changs…Great food…and the mixed drinks are fun. I had something called a “Forbidden Island Ice Tea”.
  • After assembling the gazebo, we did some yard work. Mom mowed part of my lawn! We need to have these guys down more often!
  • Dad and I headed out to Rita’s for Gelatis. It was 80ish degrees (it felt hotter), so these really hit the spot. I think Dad ate 1 3/4 large ones. “Everybody wants to be cool!”
  • Yankees/Sox – 4 homers in a row? When does that even happen? Too bad for Dad.
  • Still coughing. I think I felt something pop at one point.

Monday

  • Stuck a Laughing Squid sticker on the back of my SUV, over the Apple sticker.
  • Still coughing. 10 days?
  • Made a doctor’s appointment, headed home from work early, and the doctor prescribed a couple of meds for me. Tussionex for the cough and a 5 day course of Levaquin. The reviews of these two meds make for interesting reading. Tussionex evidently nerfs the cough pretty effectively, but it also can cause euphoria and strange dreams. Still, it gets rave reviews. Probably too good…it’s evidently addicting. Levaquin invokes a heavy dose of whining from those weaklings who don’t enjoy side effects. I’ll post my thoughts on these later.

Mike and the Dog

Posted on 16 April 2007

Looks like they’re replacing Imus with Mike and the Mad Dog, my favorite afternoon radio crew. I’ve got mixed feelings about this…while they’re certainly the most logical choice, WFAN has effectively killed their lucrative afternoon drive time slot. I can’t imagine who they’ll name to replace them that will be half as good.

M&MM is a very different type of show than Imus was, so It’ll be interesting to see what happens when Imus’ listeners tune in expecting his brand of sarcastic political and societal commentary and instead get a great big wall of sports.

Imus mostly ridiculed sports.
