Getting itchy for some kayaking

Paddlesport 2010

Diane, Lauren and I went to the NJ Paddlesport Expo yesterday in Somerset, NJ. We sat in on a couple of the seminars, but we were mostly there for the vendors. Lauren of course loved test driving all the boats:

Diane and I picked up a couple pairs of Keen sandals. I chose the Newport H2 in black. Very comfortable…should be a great shoe for Kayaking this summer.

We also purchased a standing kayak rack from “Suspenz” for our two boats.

We finished the day by visiting “Stuff Yer Face” in New Brunswick, NJ. It’s pretty close to my workplace and I’d been there before, but this was the first time for Diane and Lauren.

Their specialty is Stromboli, and true to the name, we all left stuffed.

“Man vs Food” filmed an episode at the restaurant. Check it out here:

They’ve also got a really great selection of beer for a small college town restaurant, so naturally I joined the “75 Beer Club.” On this trip I added the St. Bernardus 12 and the North Coast Pranqster Both were delicious!

Rancocas Kayaking

We took a trip this past Saturday with some new friends.

Rancocas Kayaking - Sept 2009

The leaves are definitely turning here in southern New Jersey.

We saw 5 or 6 turtles, well below the high of 30-40 we see on this trip during the warmer months.

Lauren really enjoyed spending time with their dog “Packard.” Packard isn’t quite so sure about the relationship just yet.

Here’s a map of our trip:

Mullica River Kayaking

Last weekend we went Kayak-Camping with the Wantuchs in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. We put our boats in to the Mullica river near Atsion lake, and travelled about 5 miles (more like 10 with all the twists and turns) before hitting the Mullica Wilderness camp.

There we set up camp, and what a wonderful camp it was!

A very good fire, given the amount of wood we had to work with.

The trip down was quite a challenge, as the river was loaded with snags and lift-overs, but we worked our way through. Still, we were hot and sweaty when we arrived, so having a river available for cooling off was quite a nice perk.

Cooling off

Everone just put their lifevests on, walked up river and floated back down – again and again.

It was a great time, and now I think everyone is excited about doing it again next year.

As a reward for our hard work, we stopped on the way home and picked up a supply of “celebration ribs” to commemorate a successful adventure. They were delicious!

Clarks to BCC – N. Branch Rancocas

Posted on 15 June 2009

Another day, another Kayak trip. This makes 6 so far this year.

We put in at Clarks, and traveled upstream for about an hour before turning around. Along the way we spotted 31 turtles, many geese and ducks.

But best of all, we saw 3 river otters, a first for us on this creek. The little guys were playing and having fun when we arrived, and chattered at us from the shore. We love otters.
