RIP Evel
If you were a rambunctious boy growing up during the 70′s, Evel Knievel was one of your heroes. I remember we used to set up ramps and jump our bicycles imprudently over things. We imagined we were Evel. The guy was cool. He lived large, wrecked large, and carried a diamond cane full that doubled as a flask full of “Wild Turkey”.
The less said about that whole “Snake River” thing, the better.
He passed away today from natural causes, which seems surprising as he broke nearly every bone in his body during the course of his life. The guy seemed to wreck more than he succeeded, but in the end that was part of the charm.
So long, Evel.

A real man among men
I still remember watching the Caesar’s Palace jump on TV. I had that action figure as a kid. It got pretty beat up though after all the stunts I put him through.
I had that toy as a kid too, beat the hell out of it. Kneivel was a part of the 70′s in a huge way. It’s tough to wrap my mind around what a big deal he was at the time but I think he fit the times perfectly. He was willing to try what seemed impossible and was proud of America. (Ironically, given that he was Canadian I believe.) With the upheavel of the 60′s a lot of folks just wanted to believe that America was worth being proud of again and Evel helped.
